SUCCESSFUL STRAND SWIM

Austax Strand Swim the certified entry swim to the Port of Townsville Magnetic Island Swim took place on Saturday the 7^th June 2008.

On a typically terrific Townsville winter’s day 66 competitors swam in the Austax 2008 Strand Swims. This year the swimmers had the option of either one lap of the 2.5km circuit along the Strand or 2 laps to complete a 5km course. Many swimmers took on the challenge as part of their preparation for the Port of Townsville Magnetic Island to Townsville Swim.

Once again, Penny Palfrey showed her dominance in the 5km event and even former champion tri-athlete, Miles Stewart, could not keep up. Greg Woodward, the winner of the 2007 Magnetic Island Swim, was second overall with teenager Sam Hoffman placed third. Chris Palfrey was the winner of the veterans Mens 5km and Anna Magee the veterans Womens 5km.

In the 2.5km race, Owen Flanagan, revelled in the conditions to win from John Barrett and Daniel Meurant.

Melanie McCutchan and Chloe Doyle were the only junior competitors in the Swim and organisors will be looking to encourage greater junior participation in 2009.

Many swimmers found the course a bit longer than usual with the turning bouys placed well out from the Strand Beach. Race Director, Colleen Ashfield, commented “Even if it was a bit longer course it was the same for everyone and gave the swimmers an opportunity to prepare for the longer Magnetic Island swim to be held on 12 July. 33 entries have already been received for the solo swim with entries closing on 20 June”.
