'In 1954 the inaugural Magnetic Island to Townsville Swim was staged to celebrate the visit of the new Queen Elizabeth to Townsville. That year was also the year that this proud North Queenslander made his entry into this world.  Yes, I am as old as the Swim and hence have a very close connection with this historic event.  I grew up hearing of the feats of the courageous swimmers who each year took on the passage of water between Magnetic Island and Townsville.  I always aspired to one day attempt the swim and, that day came in 2001 when, with only 7 boats available to tow 7 shark cages with 7 swimmers, 1 swimmer pulled out.  I bravely put my name forward and, less than 48hours prior to the swim, was given the nod by the committee.  That crossing will always mean more to me than any other event I have ever competed in.  I have been keen to see the historic swim continue but, without the challenges of the cages so as the event could grow into one for "all capable swimmers" and not just elite and profile swimmers.  That happened with, in 2008 the inaugural cageless swim held and, I made sure that I was one of the competitors.  The Event has come a long way and, will continue to grow.  I encourage all capable swimmers to train hard, put in the distances and, give it your best shot to conquer the waters of Cleveland Bay and, become a part of both Australian and World Swimming History.  It doesn't matter whether you come first or last, it is about giving it your best shot.  Best Wishes for your crossing.'

'Great event, great organisation and great weather !!  This is one swim I will definitely put on my calendar to do each year.  The atmosphere is great and the people who do it are there for the challenge as well as some fun too.  Enjoyed the after swim gathering to re-swim it all over again and meet new people'.
