A record 106 swimmers lined the Strand's beach in preparation for a tough event. The Beyond Running Strand Swim 2010 was the certified entry swim for competitors to qualify for the Subway Magnetic Island to Townsville Swim next month. Competitors took part in a 5km or 2.5km race, witha 1km event for juniors. Tonwsville Open Water Swim Association president, John Barrett, said the swimmers competed on a course parallel to the strand, from the Picnic Bay headland to Tobruk Pool. "It was a beautiful Townsville winter day with excellent water conditions," he said. "We certainly wouldn't ahve been able to do it with the stinger nets still in, so we're happy."
About 70 people raced in the 5km event, while 35 turned out for the 2.5km race. Swimmers needed qualify for the solo and team Magnetic Island to Townsville Open water swim which is in 5 weeks, on 18 July 2010. The younger kids also have an opportunity to give open water swimming a go with the 1km race.
2010 also saw the LJ Hooker "Splash for Cash" which was won by Donovan Castelyn and Kylee Muldoon (photo below), who each walked away with a cash prize. Kylee Muldoon also took out the women's 5km event, while the men's was won by Nathan Barrett. Lee Zahner took out the female section of the 2.5km race while Jim Meurant won the men's.
