Swimmers accompanied by 59 escort kayakers, outriggers and surf ski paddlers, support boats.  Supporters and onlookers perched on the best vantage points of the historic jetty and the granite rock headlands surrounding and it's reef fringed shallows.  Picture postcard perfect!

Magnetic Island Swim

The Swim is from Picnic Bay on beautiful
Magnetic Island to the beachfront on The Strand, Townsville; a distance of 8 km.

It is run by a dedicated team of volunteers as the
Management Committee and another 30-50 volunteers on the day of the event. 2008 was the inaugural 'cage-less' swim. Prior to 2008 the swimmers swam in shark cages.

About the Swim

2009 is the 55th year this event has been conducted. The swim is from on beautiful to the beachfront on The Strand, Townsville, a distance of 8km.

The swim is run by the Townsville Open Water Swimming Assoc. Inc. (TOWSA) which is comprised of a dedicated bunch of volunteers as the management committee, and many volunteers on the event day. MORE>>
